Tolerance Poster Show

Mirko Ilić was inspired to launch the Tolerance Project following the “House of Tolerance” film festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2017. He asked 28 artists to create a poster about tolerance, the only requirement being that they write “tolerance” in their native language. After a successful 10-day show in Ljubljana, Mirko decided to tour the posters globally. Now, whenever Tolerance Project appears in a new city, local designers contribute to the show’s ever-expanding catalogue of artworks. When the Tolerance Project had an upcoming show in the United States, Mirko asked me to contribute a piece.

One aim of the Tolerance poster show is to promote tolerance as a way of engaging in discourse, which can be the path to creating meaningful change. My concept emphasizes teaching tolerance and acceptance of all genders, gender identities, and sexual orientations. While at first glance the poster is meant to look like a decorative poster about tolerance, upon further inspection the viewer may see that there are abstracted images in the larger design (e.g. a uterus) and symbols (e.g. all gender icons) in the details.

The poster has been in shows around the world from Times Square in New York City to Belo Blato, Serbia.
