Meaghan A. Dee is an Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Virginia Tech, where she also serves as a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Creativity, Arts, and Technology. She served as Chair of Graphic Design from 2014-2025 (with the exception of sabbatical and maternity leave). Her work centers on connecting communities through storytelling and immersive design experiences and by fostering collaboration between students, faculty, and industry professionals. Meaghan sees design as a tool for engagement, communication, and innovation. In addition to her role at Virginia Tech, Meaghan is a docent emeritus for the Letterform Archive in San Francisco and served as co-chair for the AIGA Design Educators Community (AIGA DEC) Executive Board—a group dedicated to supporting and connecting design educators across the world. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Communication Design from Virginia Commonwealth University. Before her academic career, Meaghan worked professionally as a designer at Marnell Companies, an Architecture and Design firm, where she collaborated with architects, interior designers, and industrial designers on large-scale resort projects. Her expertise includes typography, branding, systems design, user-experience design, and immersive experiences. In the classroom, Meaghan encourages the exploration of diverse materials and methodologies, from motion design to augmented reality, all while emphasizing the importance of core design values and a human-centered, process-driven approach. Meaghan's work has been recognized with numerous awards from prestigious organizations such as the American Advertising Federation (AAF), AIGA, Graphis, HOW Magazine, Indigo Design Awards, Print Magazine, the United Design Alliance, and the University & College Designers Association (UCDA). Marking 50 years of action, Earth Day campaigns are intended to activate at least a billion people worldwide to meet Earth Day’s 2020 theme of climate action.” Their call to rise up resonated with me. I thought about the relationship between plants and trees growing from the earth and people rising up and taking action—as such the phrase “rise up” becomes a world play in this piece. Using the typographic ornaments from Bodoni, I created this visual representation of my conceptualization. My poster design is a call to action to rise up and take action against climate change. For the VR version of this project, we created a giant Mobius strip that viewers could walk through. We also gave users wristbands that monitor heart rate, perspiration, and location, which both allowed them to be aware of other people in the VR environment, and it gave us feedback on what points in the poem might cause an emotional response and what areas people spent the most time on. I took each of the words from his full piece (368 words) and created typographic lungs. Gaiman recorded a reading of this, as a response to the global pandemic. But his words have been rolling around in my head for numerous reasons. When I first listened to this piece in April of 2020, I thought of breath in relation to disease, but also to anxiety, and as he puts it “the pause between an inhalation and exhalation… seems to me that is precisely where we are, living in that fermata, a world of people, waiting to breathe again.” To me, it truly felt like everything had been shifted, and we had no idea what was coming next. I had created this piece for the “Viral Art Project,” which was a call to action for graphic designers, artists, and other creative people to bring their talents to the Coronavirus emergency facing our world. But as the world shifted yet again, Gaiman’s words and my images took on another meaning for me. On May 25, George Floyd was murdered. As the designer, Rick Griffith stated, “I was in the middle of a moment, and then another moment happened.” While the country and world were (and are) still in the middle of a pandemic, we also entered a social movement and a re-energizing of Black Lives Matter. Re-reading the words of “A Message of Hope,” took on another layer of depth. In part, because I have the privilege of getting to take breathing for granted. I think about just how long eight minutes and forty-six seconds is—how many breaths I am able to take in that span of time. But also, as Gaiman puts it, “There are so many fragile things. After all people break so easily, and so do dreams and hearts. The Hope Wall “is a site for exploring a multitude of ideas and perspectives addressing the overarching theme of hope. Continuing indefinitely, this public ‘canvas’ will change every few weeks or so as new posters are added on top of existing ones. Participants include an international array of designers and artists, along with a strong Richmond contingent. Young designers are represented, as well as long-established figures in the field. We intend to produce a book documenting the entire project. Wheat pasting posters in the public realm has historically been an effective grassroots form of visual communication within the urban landscape, particularly during turbulent periods. Given the passionate protests and demands for systemic change that are currently transforming Richmond, and the tragic consequences of the pandemic, this DIY medium once again seems especially appropriate for our times. We view this project as a way to spark longer conversations about the many critical issues that confront us, helping to bolster understanding and confidence in the future. The client was a small-batch brewery, that wanted to begin formally packaging their beer. They wanted to have a bit of a “retro, waterskiing” vibe to their brand. I create a hop icon, with a waterski handle for the main eye-catching element. The rest of the illustration follows this line-drawing aesthetic. The top illustration of the sailboat gives a nod to their community’s welcome signage. Using Processing, I created a dynamic background pattern, which I printed as a reference guide. I placed the print on a lightbox, and I re-created the pattern using a combination of Letraset and Zipatone. While the primary visual element is arrows (to help lead the eye throughout the composition), I also used the letters A, I, G, and A at the top and U, S, and C at the bottom (as the event is co-sponsored by AIGA and USC). The concept behind my poster was that the Arch is the most iconic symbol of St. Louis, and it reminds me of where I grew up. So I filled the poster with icons of additional things that reminded me of that time (Ted Drew’s frozen custard, the Cardinals, Imo’s Pizza), and other significant structures in St. Louis (the old courthouse, Busch stadium, the sculpture in front of the Art Museum, the Science Center). The star in the middle is based on the old iron stars you find in alleys throughout the city. On top of this, many struggle with anxiety and depression. I wanted to remind people that they don’t need to do everything perfectly, and that it is an accomplishment simply to get through this challenging time. It’s okay to not be okay (but I hope that you are). So, I used the lyrics from the song to create snow-like type, which fell around blossoming dogwood branches. I selected the cardinal and dogwood, as they are the official bird and tree of Virginia—and they are also my mother’s favorite, both of which we would see often where I grew up in St. Louis. They spend half of their time in the field and the other half using science to inform smart decisions to conserve wildlife. Oceans Initiative’s tagline is “Science for the Sea.” I wanted to make a poster that captured both the beauty and the science of what they do. Using a cymatic visualizer, CymaScope, I played a humpback whale song that Rob Williams (of Oceans Initiative) had collected. The cymatic visualizer reacted to the notes of the whale song, and through this I gathered hundreds of images. I then went back through the imagery and selected the most striking images and composed the poster, while integrating the subtle “ocean” type. Seen here are the names of the Weinstein accusers (as of October 2017) breaking through the lyrics of the Simon & Garfunkel song “The Sound of Silence.” The overall shape of the letters form The Weinstein Company logo, which is dissolving into an hourglass. This symbolizes how societal change can take a long time, but these women coming forward has set that change in motion. For me, the “me too” movement has been both incredibly empowering and saddening. As wonderful as it is to see people speaking out against those who have sexually harassed and assaulted them, it’s never enjoyable to find out that the actors, news anchors, politicians, etc. that we loved have done awful things. These moments can also dredge up terrible memories for sexual assault victims, particularly when social media feeds are filled with friends and family sharing their own stories. While I personally have been harassed and touched-against-my-will, I never felt strong enough to tweet or post about my experiences – even though I am I proud of those who did choose to share their stories. Perhaps it’s because my own experiences are complex and nuanced, and I cared about those individuals, in spite of their wrong-doings. But I realize that is true for many of the people who spoke up too, and that is part of why it takes so much strength for them to share. This poster was a part of the group exhibition Typo-Poetry: Despite Black and White in Sound at the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation Hall Gallery and was accepted into the 2018 FL3TCH3R Juried Exhibition. The text and image integration emphasizes Art and Technology, which is the focus of the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech. This piece was mailed to prospective students of the Creative Technologies MFA program and made available to students interested in pursuing a Pathways Art Minor at Virginia Tech. I also applied this branding to a website redesign that I completed with former student, Sammi Keck. The focus of the area was to meld the exploration of innovative technologies and the design of creative experiences with best practices for developing impact-driven and meaningful outcomes and solutions. I was tasked with a website design and a promotional poster for the group (which ICAT and their designer, Dylan Parker, coded). The industrial materials are meant to make a connection to Architecture, Construction, and Art (the various focuses of the college). I made it to hang in my daughter’s room (I was pregnant during the time of my residency), and the last line in the piece is “I just wanted to hold you in my arms,” which is how I feel about her. In the first letterpress run, I set the hand reaching toward a sky of hand-set stars.
